Around Winton

Winton, on the Matilda Highway, is the birthplace of Australia's second national anthem, Waltzing Matilda. The song was written in 1895 and first performed in Winton at the North Gregory Hotel. South-west of Winton, the Diamantina Lakes National Park can be found. From this park, it's a beautiful drive through fascinating landscape, towards Winton. On the way, one can make a small detour, to take in Lake Quarry Conservation Park. Here, millions of years ago, a dinosaur chase happened. A big meat-eating member of the species went after his smaller vegetarian friends. Footprints of this stampede have fossilised and can still be seen here. Apparently, these are the only ones of its kind.
