Coongie Lakes National Park

If you like the Innamincka Regional Reserve … Coongie Lakes National Park is even better. Coongie Lakes used to be part of the Innamincka Regional Reserve but were declared a national park a couple of years ago. The Coongie Lakes wetland system is the only major unpolluted, unregulated freshwater system in arid Australia. The wetlands change depending on the amount of rainwater flowing down the Cooper creek tributaries from southern Queensland. As a major wetland system in an arid region, the lakes are recognised as having international significance under the Ramsar Wetlands Convention. The lakes are included on the National Heritage List and have been recognised by the CSIRO as being of World Heritage standard. The Coongie lakes is home to Over 470 plant species (52 of which are considered very rare), 180 bird species, 20 native mammal species, 35 reptile, 12 native fish and 10 frog species (source: Wilderness Society).
