Stewart Island

Stewart Island is New Zealand's third island in size.. It's located South of the South Island. Only a handful of people live there.
One can go to Stewart Island from Invercargil. The easiest way to get to Stewart Island is by plane, but there's also a boat.
Stewart Island is a walkers heaven. It has 2 main tracks. The first is the Raikura Track, which is an official Great Walk and immensely popular. The second is called the North West Circuit. It can take as many as 10 days to complete it. We did a part of the North West Circuit.
We were dropped off by a water taxi at Fred's Camp Hut. It is situated at one of the many inlets that Stewart Island has.
From Freshwater Landing to Mason Bay, the next hut, and back, one hass to pass the Chocolate Swamp. This Swamp is so boggy that they had to make a board walk on top of it! Mason Bay itself lies on the west side of Stewart Island, hence the beautiful picture of the sunset. The only way to get there is by foot, so you won't find many people there.
Freshwater Landing lies on the other side of the river, so you have to cross a swing bridge in order to get there.
A day's walk from Fresh Landing lies the Rocky Mountain. On top of the island, the views are pretty spectacular..
